28 - Stories Trapped in Ice Series - GAS LAB - NIELS BOHR INSTITUTE, DENMARK

190,00

Michael Döring and Michael Dyonisius from Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen University, extract ancient air bubbles by sublimation from an ice core drilled in Greenland to measure the isotopic composition of potent greenhouse gases, including methane. Methane is more than 28 times as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping atmospheric heat.
Greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as CO2, CH4 and N2O, play an important role in Earth’s climate by absorbing and back-radiating infrared radiation emitted from Earth’s surface heated by sunlight. The rapid increase in atmospheric GHG concentrations in recent decades is the main driver of current Global warming (IPCC, 2023).
Accurate measurements of paleo-GHG concentration are needed to understand natural climate variability better. Researchers in the Gas Laboratory of the Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth (PICE) Division at Niels Bohr Institute, led by Prof. Thomas Blunier, are working at the forefront of concentration and isotope measurements of a variety of air compounds, including - CO2, CH4 and N2O.
